What is Twitter?
Twitter is a Minature Blog - Micro-blogging is defined as a quick update usually containing a very limited number of characters. It is a popular features of social networks like facebook where you can update your status, but it has become best known because of Twitter.
So What is Twitter? - It is many different things to many different people. It can be used by a family to keep in touch, or a company to coordinate business, or the media to keep people informed or a writer to build up a fan base.
Twitter is micro-blogging. It is social messaging. It is an event coordinator, a business tool, a news reporting service and a marketing utility.
Now we have got what is Twitter out of the way, we have included our quick guide for it.
Twitter has its own language that has evolved and will continue to do so given that you are limited to 140 charactres, including usernames!. Therefore it's really important to understand the shorthand people commonly use. We have put togther a list of technical terms that relate back to Twitter Actions as well as some of the Shorthand Terms that are often used when tweeting.
Used | Means | Explanation |
RT | Retweet | To retweet or RT means copying and pasting another users tweet with their username. It is a method of sharing a tweet so your followers can see. |
MT | Modified Tweet | This is similar to a retweet, it is a RT that has been shortened to fit the 140 character limit. |
DM | Direct Message | Direct messages are hidden from public streams and can only be sent to people following you. |
PRT | Partial Tweet | This can be used instead of MT. when removing information rather than modifying it, use this method. |
/CC or CC | Carbon Copy | This is the same as when you CC someone in an email. This denotes that you are specifically attaching someone to a conversation or you believe it's relevant to them. |
# | Hash Tag | The # symbol is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages. #Helping you find interesting Tweets People use the hashtag symbol # before relevant keywords in their Tweet to categorize thoseTweets to show more easily in Twitter Search Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets in that category Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics Using # If you Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet Don't #spam #with #hashtags. GTFO | Get The F*@# Out | Expressing an opinion of sorts! |
NSFW | Not Safe For Work | Used to warn readers about a link and content that could cause trouble if viewed at work. It is also widely used to distribute content that is not suitable for children. |
NSFL | Not Safe For Life | This is used to warn that links and content are of a disturbing nature. |
